Baking

EDITS:

One of my subject’s most recent hobbies is baking, so I thought it would be appropriate to photograph the process.

“I am a big fan of cake. I baked two for my friend’s birthday and tend to bake on at least a weekly basis.”

“I like being able to produce something that other people can  enjoy.”

It seemed more interesting to have close ups of her hands and the bowl, rather than portraits which I already had quite a few of. The image with the egg being cracked was interesting. The kitchen was dark so I had to use flash, which I was worried would be too harsh to make the cake mix look appetizing but I don’t think that is the case. The photograph of the cracked egg falling into the bowl interested me and I thought it would possibly make it into the final 20 images.

Christmas Market

I photographed Chloe with the mug of mulled cider whilst she was talking to friends, so that the photographs would be natural and not rigid. The use of available light created a warm glow that complimented the bright colours of the stalls. Her fun personality are reflected in the colours and the themes from this shoot. I also thought that it would be interesting to have photographs of her outside and in an environment that contrasted the studio.

This image will definitely be in the final 20:dsc_0272-copy

The lighting makes her look as though she is glowing and the framing is interesting. She is in between a stall and a restaurant, and she breaks the two places up. It seems to fit the rule of thirds.

Christmas Market

We went to the christmas market with some friends and I photographed Chloe there at the stalls. I think that the natural lighting and bright colours will hopefully make a couple of nice images. These are also the first images that have other people in them and I think that they might help make the photographs in the series more diverse.contactsheet-001-copycontactsheet-002-copy

In the home

Many of these images were not useful because they were underexposed. I moved around in the house to try and find better lighting. I was hesitant to use flash because I worried it would be too harsh and unflattering but I think that the photographs in the kitchen and on the sofa worked better with flash. The photograph of Chloe eating a sandwich in a santa costume illustrated her fun side. It was just before a Christmas party and I decided to get a few candid photographs. I also asked her to pose later and thought that the images where she was standing and addressing the camera worked.

These photographs are of Chloe in her living room and kitchen. I wanted to photograph her in her usual surroundings to show what she is usually doing in her spare time. I think that it made sense to include the photograph of Chloe presenting her cake because baking is one of her hobbies. It might be better to photograph her in the process of baking too, as it would also allow a variety of different shots. I might also photograph her whilst she is studying and possibly in a meeting for the newspaper, which she is the founder of. It might be difficult, seeing as there may not be another meeting for a while. I am planning on following her the next time that she reports on an event.

Chloe made this decoration for her room, it’s a flying key from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. I felt that it would be important to include it because Harry Potter is such a big part of her personality. “I’ve loved Harry Potter ever since I was really little and it’s still a big part of my life.” I think that this is the most effective of the group of photographs. I had hoped that the ones that were backlit by a window would have been better but they look flat so I thought a darker background might contrast the key better.

Leo Novel: Femen – the Naked War

Novel presented his series of photographs as a slide show on the foto 8 website, set to Western Fiasco – Bare Breasts (Femen Hymn). “Inna Shevchenko, a 24 year old journalism graduate from Kiev University and a key member of the movement, fled to France to seek political asylum and founded Femen international in the premises of a squatted theater in the neighbourhood of Goutte d’Or in Paris.”

Many of the photographs have at least partial nudity, but Novel has managed to photograph these women in a way that is empowering rather than sexualizing or objectifying them, even in photographs like below where the woman is being arrested. She looks furious, and has the words “may fascism rest in hell” marked on her chest. Many of the photographs are aggressive, an include women screaming in the direction of the camera. This is contrasted with images of women standing in crowds, wearing flowers in their hair and smiling. I felt that this represented a part of feminism, that allows women be as feminine as they want, and that being strong also can mean what they want it to.

Edits for radio shoot

There is variety in this group of images and they get across the idea that the subject is a hard worker. The close ups of her hand on the desk are effective due to the interesting angle and shallow depth of field. It was interesting to photograph the studio because it is a part of the university that not many people get to see. I wanted to include an image where she is clearly talking on the radio, although that did involve a lot of shifting angles because the microphone was hiding part of her face. In the image that I included she is presenting and also typing at the same time. It implies that she is can multitask.

The over the shoulder shot in the bottom right is a good establishing shot for the environment and would aid the close ups in giving them more context.

“In my spare time I am a nerd so I spend a lot of time doing extra things for my course.”

“I love presenting radio and hope that working at Tone will help me to further my career.”

Radio Shoot

I photographed Chloe on her weekly radio show, which I had planned to photograph her in last week but it had been cancelled. I wanted to illustrate the fact that she’s a hard worker through these and I am planning on including images of her working at home too. Chloe co- hosts the radio show Twist and Shout on Tone Radio with her friend Beth, which mostly consists of cheesy music and fun short quizzes. Gloucestershire’s Tone radio was recently voted no.1 University radio station in the country for “cheese.”

Change of Plan

I was originally going to film all three of the subjects that I contacted about the interviews, and also about my stills project, but I have decided just to focus on Chloe. I feel like 90 seconds is not long enough for 3 different women to discuss their sexuality in any depth at all, and as they do not know each other, the discussion would not be anchored in anything else, so it would have to be about them as individuals. I am planning on using all three for the three minute video, that way there will be a minute on each individual, which is plenty of time.

Buzzfeed Video Entitled “11 Questions You Want to Ask a Lesbian.” ETC.

Whilst the tone of buzzfeed videos are often less formal than what I intend on doing, I feel like they are actually similar in theme. I think that the question and answer format might be worth investigating because if the questions are open enough it means that the people in the videos are allowed the freedom to represent themselves through me rather than be represented by me.

In this video several women discuss what female masculinity means to them.

One woman addresses questions from twitter about being a Lesbian. This is more in depth but about one person’s perspective rather than several.

In this video, there are questions from lesbians to lesbians.

Quotes from Chloe

“I identify as bisexual, or sometimes I identify as biromantic bisexual, and sometimes I identify as biromantic asexual. I keep changing my mind but that doesn’t change the validity of my identity.”

“We live in such a hetero normative society that when I meet someone who is like me, I’m like yes!”

“I think it’s important to know people who are like you so you’re not like, I’m a weirdo.”

I feel that these quotes will be relevant and would aid some of the studio portraits well.
